Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise, and the good news is there are plenty of ways to keep your pup engaged indoors (or in the shade) during the warmer months.

1. Frozen Lick Mats
Lick mats are a brilliant year-round enrichment tool, but they become an absolute summer staple when you pop them in the freezer. Simply spread your dog's favourite soft food — think peanut butter, plain yoghurt, mashed banana, or wet food — onto a lick mat and freeze for a couple of hours.
The repetitive licking action is naturally calming and soothing for dogs, and the frozen treat keeps them occupied for much longer than a room-temperature version. It's a win-win on a hot afternoon.
Top tip: Prepare a batch of frozen lick mats at the start of the week so you always have one ready to go.
2. Snuffle Mats for Indoor Nose Work
Snuffle mats tap into your dog's most powerful sense — their nose. By hiding kibble or small treats within the mat's fibres, you encourage your dog to forage and sniff, which is mentally tiring in the best possible way.

6. Training Sessions in Short Bursts
Summer is a great time to work on training — indoors, in the cool. Short, positive training sessions of 5–10 minutes are mentally stimulating and strengthen your bond with your dog. Use your dog's daily treat allowance as rewards to keep things balanced.

Keeping It Safe This Summer
Always make sure your dog has access to fresh, cool water — especially during and after enrichment activities. Avoid enrichment sessions in direct sunlight or during the hottest parts of the day (typically 11am–3pm in the UK). If your dog seems lethargic, is panting heavily, or shows signs of overheating, stop the activity and move them somewhere cool immediately.
